Websites are the monographs of the twenty first century. It is a fluid medium that presents a volume of work at the end of fingertips available any time, any place. Like a Book, there is a codified format and viewer expectations. Unlike a Book, the sequence is non-linear. Embedded links allow for a freedom of movement and unlimited combinations. The experience is not a hallway with an entrance and an exit. Rather, it is a web of interconnected routes, each user trailblazing their own path.
Contemporary web design must be fluid: the format needs to adapt to a seemingly limitless array of device sizes and proportions. This means that where strong organizational design elements are employed, they must invoke a sense of order to establish continuity between pages. Within the established framework, content can then transform without losing a sense of control. This dialectic, combined with the dynamic role of user input, results in a dramatic medium with unlimited potential.
