Proposal: to document the landscape and architecture of French Polynesia

Compared to the still-erupting islands of Hawaii, the islands of French Polynesia are far more ancient. Volcanic formations that date back millions of years, these islands have decayed slowly from relentless winds and tides.
Perimeter coral accumlates and rises as the islands slowly sink back to the ocean depths, creating the distinct atolls.  The protective perimeter shelters the inner lagoons, creating a tranquility narrowly separated from  the rough ocean swells.

The protected waters allow for the overwater hut typology. Cast out from the shore like the ripples of skipping stones, these thatch roof villages are neither of the land nor of the water. They hover in a realm in between.

The color of the sunsets stretch from the horizon across the entire sky. Swaths of orange, purple and pink traverse overhead to create encompassing color. From almost any vantage, there is a reflection of color on the water below, separated by a thin black horizon. It is no surpise that Gauguin was drawn to the beautiful color of this place.
