To write a book is to allow an outsider into a part of your mind, a part you believe is worth sharing. To read a book is have a piece of someone else, to own it and hold it in your hands. It is an intimate encounter. When designing and writing a book, even more than in other forms of artistic expression, it about curating a personal conversation between author and reader. Through the use of both images and text, specific meaning can be conveyed, a real depth achieved.
There are two important qualities that distinguish a book from other artistic mediums: the format and the rhythm. The format comes with a loaded emotional response. The dimensions and weight are indicative: short and wide or tall and narrow, hard cover or soft, heavy weight paper or light. Second, there is a staccato rhythm set by the reader through the process of page turning. A sense of drama unfolds; some content is flipped through quickly, while others demand a long pause.
